Emmalyn 9 months old

On January 13, 2015 Emmalyn turned 9 months old!

She is so mobile - crawling, kneeling, pulling up on things and walking along things.  She often forgets to hold on and lets go.  She will walk with you if you hold her hands. She wants to be where the people are so if you go into another room, she will follow you.  Watch out though if there are any crumbs or other little things on the floor because she will find them and try to eat them.  (She loves to go after and try to eat shoes.  Gross.)

She has stopped saying "ga" and now it's just "ba" or "ma".  She signs "more" and we think we've seen her do "eat" and "milk".  She doesn't say da da but when she tries it sounds more like "blah".

She loves to clap and will clap to songs or when she's happy.

She loves her brother and Landen and Hayden.  She wants to be around them.

She great at getting food from her hands to her mouth.  She doesn't have the pincer grasp down yet.  I've stuck to mainly the basics on food - brown rice cereal, applesauce, mangoes, pears, bananas, carrots, peas, squash, sweet potatoes, plus all the puffs type food and rice crackers.  She's not a big fan of mangoes or avocados.  We aren't pureeing everything and try to give her finger food as much as possible.  Her doctor is a fan of "infant led weaning" where you just give them what you are eating in baby sized pieces and let them gum it.  I haven't gone so far as to just give her what we are eating, but feel like I'm pushing the textures faster than I did with Maxwell.  The other thing is that she is soooo insistent if we are eating and she isn't.  So, she's gotten some non-baby food that I wouldn't have given in and given Maxwell.  She will get a bite of hamburger rice or garlic bread or french fries, etc.  Lucky second child.  :)  We have given her a baby sippy cup so she can start to learn how to drink water from it.

She is so wiggly that changing her or getting her dressed can be torture!  I try to keep a toy in her hands but that doesn't always work.

She is still breast fed but my milk supply has dwindled horribly.  I pump 3 times a day at work and lately my total output for all three sessions is about 4 oz.  (She will drink 3 4 oz bottles while I am work.)  So supply is not keeping up with the demand.  I have tried essential oils, supplements, tea, fenugreek pills, increasing pumping sessions, more water..everything! I have been talking to a lactation specialist but nothing is helping.  I am really discouraged because I'm willing to put in the time and effort but the supply just isn't staying up.  The only other thing I did with Maxwell was rent a hospital grade pump.  At this point I don't think it's going to make much of a difference so I don't want to spend the extra money.  I have enough with my fresh and frozen (and friend's frozen) supply that I should be able to make it to a year without having to do formula.  I wish I was a milk producing fiend because I wouldn't mind continuing to pump and then donating the extra.   :(  She wants to nurse all the time and clearly communicates that to me by pulling at my clothes or trying to eat my chest but then when she does nurse she constantly gets distracted by her brother, the tv, someone walking by.  It's frustrating for me how she doesn't just focus and finish.

She loves getting her "teeth" brushed (with the infant gum cleaner).

Her favorite toy is the activity table.  She can stand there for a long time, just playing by herself.  She rarely likes to be in her jumpy exercise center thing.  She doesn't jump and quickly wants to be out by everyone else.

She will give up the giggles for her daddy when he tickles her but we still have to work hard if it's just her and I to get them.  When she does laugh it's super cute and usually involves some screeching.

She's a momma's girl, which I love.  Even though it's not good sleeping habits, I love that she wants to sleep with us.  Her little hands will escape from her swaddle in the night and I'll wake up to her laying next to me with her hand on me.  Or she'll roll over to be next to Peter and put her hand out to touch find his face.  It's so sweet.

She is still a happy baby with lots of smiles.  She is really interested in what is going on and will peer around you to watching something that is interesting to her. She doesn't like to be held by other people and will quickly freak out.

This girl can scream.  When she gets mad she doesn't hold back.  This is most often when she needs to go to sleep and doesn't want to.

She isn't a huge fan of the car and has a short span for being happy in the car and then will either scream or go to sleep if you are lucky.

She loves to be outside and starts jabbering when she gets outside.

Bedtime is funny because I'll be cuddling with Max and she will crawl over him to get between him and myself so she can cuddle with me.  (It frustrates Maxwell so much!)  We don't have a bedtime routine for her, we've just added her to Maxwell's routine.  She usually goes to bed around 8:30, struggles to sleep until around 11:30 when we are in the room with her and she finally stays asleep.  Then she'll wake up to nurse between 4-6 and then will sleep until around 8 am.

During the day she usually take 3 more naps.  The first one is the longest and if you are lucky can last a couple hours but the others are shorter and are anywhere from 1/2 hr to 1 1/2 hrs.

She LOVES to get in the shower.  If someone is in the shower she will crawl over and lean on the glass.  I bring her baby bathtub into the shower, fill it up with some water, and let her play in there while I shower.  Sometimes Maxwell will come in with us.  I don't know how long we will be able to bring her bathtub in there because she's trying to crawl out of it now.

She is such a sweet girl and so happy.  I love watching her engage with her brother.  I know we are just at the very beginning of her being able to communicate with us and I will enjoy seeing her personality really blossom.  She does keep us on our toes though.  For example, she wants to climb the stairs and when Britt's family moves out in a couple weeks, the gate on the stairs will be going up.

She's a little person.  She knows what she wants and she makes it happen.

Goodbye to Apartment Living

I went back to the apartment to drop off the keys and ensure the cleaning lady did a good job cleaning up the apartment.

It was weird seeing it so empty.  Max instantly knew where we were going and was so excited and happy when we started walking down the hallway to the apartment.  I felt a little bad for him - he's in a new foreign environment at the house and he was so happy to be back to "home" - the only place he's lived.

While it's nice being in our house, I will miss some things about apartment living - the convenience of not having responsibility to maintain anything, no yard to take care of, the pool that was steps away, small space = less space to clean, don't have to worry about what day is trash day, I felt safe knowing that it was a gated building, could open the windows without worrying about safety (we were on the third floor), our dishwasher was awesome and we never pre-rinsed our dishes, watching the pool furniture get blown into the pool during big storms, hearing/watching the fireworks go off at the ballpark a couple blocks away, the park next door along with all the retail stores we could walk to, the fun community activities like bunco night (I won some money off rent!), I loved the big granite island with the pendant lighting.

What I won't miss - stressing about being too loud for the people below us (the lady complained twice when we had the kids over...I was the bigger person and took her cupcakes and explained that you can't keep a 4 year old from jumping and running), having it take 5 minutes to drive through the parking garage, get out of the car, and walk through the halls to our door, feeling like we couldn't invite people over because it was a small space, having our storage unit on a different floor so not being able to verify daily that we hadn't had our storage unit broken into again, having to meet pizza delivery guys at the entrance to the building because they didn't want to mess with trying to find our apartment, having to go to a mail room to get my mail, hearing my laundry going because the washer/dryer was just behind some doors in the dining room, the CRAZY loud fire alarms going off in the winter when pipes freeze and burst or during regular tests, the crappy carpet, the flat electric cook top, a fridge w/o water and ice in the door.

The brand new fireplace by the pool (of course they don't finish it until we move out)

We loved sitting in the couches and chairs in the background.

The pool

Our apartment is the middle set of windows, 3rd floor up.

Woo hoo!!!!!  Momma let me hold her keys!

Happy Birthday...I mean Moving Day, Peter!

Poor Peter.  He didn't get to do anything fun for his birthday.  Instead, we spent the day moving into the new house.  The movers were there early but it took much longer than I thought it would.  It ended up being about 6 hours total!  (Worth every penny though to have someone else move my stuff and not have a sore back at the end of the day or feel bad for roping our friends/family into helping.)

Apartment is starting to look empty

Our apartment closets were full of packed boxes so that they didn't overtake us in the living areas

The movers were gone around 2 and then Brittany, Kimberly, and the kids came over.  I was starting to get really stressed out with the efforts to get things unpacked and the place clean enough to have a bunch of people over the next day for Max's birthday party.  My two awesome sisters helped me unpack the kitchen.  I would have been LOST without them.  They are the best sisters ever and are always so willing to help out.  Sometimes I feel like they got the short end of the sister stick because I don't help them as much as they help me.  (Things that stress me out are no big deal to them.)  They were both so very helpful when Max was born, they both again came to my rescue when I broke my foot, and now again here they are helping me move into a new house.  I miss my mom and not having her around to help in times like these would be so hard if I didn't have such helpful and supportive sisters.

Video - Max and Landen were hilarious chasing each other around this pillar.

We bought the very first purchase for our new house - a gas grill!  I have greatly missed the convenience of having our own grill not to mention the yummy food.  I have looked forward to this sooooo much.  Our new place has a gas line on the patio so we don't have to deal with propane.  My sisters stopped at the store to get the fixings for burgers for dinner and Peter got to work on putting it together.

Unfortunately, Peter ended up not having all the parts he needed and by that point everyone was tired and hungry so we just cooked the burgers inside.  While we were all a little disappointed, the burgers were still good and I know I'll enjoy a grilled burger soon!  (Yeah for cooking with gas both inside and outside!)

Max has never spent a night alone in his own room.  We thought maybe now that we are in the new house, it might be time.  So during the day when we were unpacking, we set up the pack-n-play in his new room and tried to lay him down for a nap.  It didn't work at all.  He just screamed.  I could tell that he was scared (terrified!) in his new room.  It was full of boxes and was completely foreign to him.  I can understand being scared.  So that night, I didn't feel it was right to torture him and make him sleep in his room so we let him sleep in the pack-n-play in our bedroom.  And to be honest, I was super happy about it.  Peter talks about moving him to his own room but I'm really not ready for it.  I know this is silly and if you asked me a year and 2 weeks ago if I was going to be like this, I'd say NO WAY!  But I want him close to me.  I still get up in the middle of the night to check if he's still breathing.  I want to be able to hear his little cries quickly and be able to get to him fast when he wakes up and is ready to nurse in the morning.  I worry about him being in a room by himself, and this is crazy I KNOW, and someone breaking his window and hurting or taking him.  I want him in my room for now, by me.
Max hanging out in the new master bedroom

Since Peter is being so healthy, he didn't want a cake or anything.  So we didn't really celebrate his birthday at all.  And moving days are stressful, people's patience wears thin, and neither of these make for a great day.  Sorry Peter - next year will be the best birthday yet!  (Although he says birthdays aren't a big deal for him... you know how it goes, it's not a big deal but yet it still kinda is...)

Places to play: Highchairs and Boxes

Shoving the puffs in by the fist full

This is Max mid-tantrum because he wants more.  He immediately grits his teeth, fusses, and his face goes red.  He's fully committed to get what he wants. :)

Brittany let Max play with his yogurt and this is what she got. He must have been in heaven. Momma would never let him get that messy. He's lucky to have Aunt Brittany. :)

"This is a hat, right?"

Got to get every last bit.

All that mess can only lead to one thing - a bath!

He enjoyed playing in the sink.

At home we are getting serious about packing up - we only have a week to go before it's time to move!

Max hanging out.  He's running out of space to play with all boxes.

If all the space is taken up by boxes, the only space left to play is IN the boxes!
