New Baby, New Car

With the addition of the new baby, it was time to get a new car.

We have been a 1 car family for the last 2 years and I have loved it.  I felt good about reducing our carbon footprint.  I really enjoyed riding to and from work each day with Peter.  It gave us a chance to connect each day before we got home and got distracted by things at home - TV, computers, laundry, etc.  It was a chance for us to be in tight quarters together each day for at least 20 minutes and hold hands.  Plus it was nice to only have 1 car to insure, 1 car to gas up, 1 car to maintain.  Sure, once a month or so it was a pain that he had the car with him at work and I needed to run an errand or something but we dealt with it.  If I could have left it this way, I would have.

Unfortunately it just isn't wise anymore now that we have Max.  I need to have a car to take him to doctor's appts or to be babysat, etc.  And sure it will be nice to be able to run errands during the day while I am still on maternity leave.

So last weekend we started the un-fun job of shopping for a car.  We knew we wanted something that would be roomier so car seats would fit comfortably and that Peter would find comfortable.  We also wanted a car with more seats so that we can fit in out-of-town visitors or Brittany and her family.  Plus, we then have a car that our family can grow with.  I hate car shopping.  It is such a hassle.  We spent Friday night, Saturday day, Monday night, and Tuesday night test driving, negotiating, visiting other dealerships, re-negotiating, etc.  PAINFUL!  Plus, doing all this while toting around a 5 week old just isn't fun for him.  My poor son spent more time in a car seat in one day than he has his whole life put together probably.  He was so good though and mostly slept (although he paid us back by having rough nights).

We finally decided on a 2012 Toyota Highlander and brought it home yesterday.  I'm really happy with how it drives and the safety ratings it got.  It should be a great family car that will last us for a long time to come.  I can't believe I have a baby and an SUV.  CRAZY!
