Max is 1 year old! Part III - The party

We decided to wait and have the "big" party with friends a week after Max's birthday when we got into the new house.  I didn't want to have a bunch of people over to the apartment when everything was all boxed up.  We still had a party, but just a smaller party with Britt's family and us.

My works of art - Here's Max's cake and the cupcakes everyone else enjoyed.
I got the frosting technique from Pinterest.

Video - Max opening his presents.  He wasn't too into ripping the paper.  Luckily Hayden was willing to help out.  :)

A toy that lights up and makes noise?  Perfect!

Playing with his dump truck

Checking out the walker that Brittany got him

He was soooo excited about it.  He was pestering Peter as Peter was trying to get the box opened and the toy put together.

Jumping right in to playing with it.  Aunt Brittany sure knows how to pick the right gift - it was a big hit! (for all the kids)

It hit me that he has no idea this is a phone.  This isn't what phones look like to him.

Walking like a pro with the walker.

He was having a blast with all the attention and toys.

Then we got prepared for the cake...

Aunt Tawny, Uncle Alex, Payton, Jaxton, and Lola skyped so they could watch Max dig into his cake.  (I loved that they could "be there" and participate.)

Hayden helped blow out the candle.

Video - You can enjoy Max NOT enjoying his cake.  He didn't like the frosting on his hands and just wanted out of his high chair.

My hands are dirty - can someone wash them?

Helping Max dig into the cake

He did try a few bites on his own, but that is it.

We were hoping for the great moment where the 1 yr old digs into the cake enthusiastically and gets all sorts of messy.  It just didn't happen.  Max didn't like his hands being dirty and would really only eat the cake if you fed it to him.  He kept fussing to get out of the high chair.  It was very anti-climatic.  (Sorry for the boring show Tawny and Alex!)  It also left me with a problem...we have this party planned for him next week and there will be a bunch of people wanting to see the same thing we wanted to see today.  How come my kid isn't into this cake thing???

He did end up being messy but most of it was a result of what we had "helped" him do to try and get him interested in the cake.  The only pieces he picked up by himself were those that didn't have icing on them. Max just isn't an icing-fan.  I can't totally blame him, I don't like a lot of icing either.

Seriously, I'm done.  Get me out!

We gave him a bath in the sink to get him all cleaned up for dinner.

He's never had a bath in our sink before.  He thought it was pretty cool.
