My team at work had a picture Halloween costume contest so to show that that even their boss was going to participate, I went and bought a costume just for this picture. I can't remember a time EVER in my life (as in NEVER EVER) that I (or my mom) went to a store and purchased a pre-made costume. So this was a first for me. I picked out this Greek Goddess get up. Perhaps I would look good as a brunette? I wore it long enough to take the picture and then it went back in the bag, ready to be exchanged at the store. I thought I'd like it but I didn't.
We got "boo'd". I had never heard of this but apparently it's done in suburbian neighborhoods. Someone leaves a little basket filled with treats on your porch, along with the "You've been Boo'd" directions and a picture of the ghost. You are suppossed to put the ghost in on of your windows so your neighbors know that you've been Boo'd and then go BOO someone else in your neighbor by giving them a little treat basket with the directions, etc.
I was excited about it. It made me feel like we really DID live in a neighborhood (even though it's mostly empty). So the next day I headed to the dollar store for a bunch of little goodies i.e. crap to put in the basket that I was going to give out.
Side note - around the middle of October, my neighbor Maryann and I made brownies for all of the neighbors who had moved in so far with a cute little note welcoming them to the neighborhood. Since we were the first and second houses to move in, we figured we'd be the welcoming committee. So far, 11 other houses had been moved into!
The Boo basket we were given, I forgot to take a picture of the one I gave away.
We have really great neighbors to the West of us (to the East is an empty lot) - Chris and Maryann who have a polite 14 year old son named Jared who calls me Ma'am. (GRRRRRRR - I'm not old enough to be called that. In my mind, he should just think of me as a young, cool adult. Forget the reality that I am so old that I was graduating high school when he was born. How in the world did I get to be so old? I certain don't feel that old.)
Anyway, Chris and Maryann were throwing a Halloween party on October 27th so that the new neighbors could all get to know each other. We went and bought Peter a costume too (have never done that before either).
He was a jailbird.
I exchanged my Goddess costume for something more wholesome and "safe" - Dorothy from Wizard of Oz.
Notice my pink sparkly shoes. I tried to find Red but the closest thing Target had was pink. Next year I won't put off the finishing touches to the last day.
I made Chicken Cucumber Cups (thanks Brittany for the recipe). They are yummy and I wanted to impress my new neighbors with my culinary (ha!) skills.
This was the first Halloween Party I think I've ever been to. Peter doesn't ever dress up and we don't go to many parties. I was a little nervous just because I barely knew my next door neighbors and didn't know anyone else. So we walk in and very quickly see that someone else at the part is dressed in the exact same costume as me!
uh, great
So I laugh it off and do the obligatory "great minds think alike" comment...whatever... Walk further into the house, check out everyone else that is there, etc and see that there's a guy at the part in the exact same costume as Peter!
Seriously???
We should have shown up at the party earlier so that when they each walked in (they weren't together), THEY'd be the copycats. What were the odds? There were only like 20 people total at that party. Oh well, what can you do but laugh? (I now can see the benefits of homemade costumes - at least you can guarantee no one else will show up in the same costume.) I had a good time being out of the house and meeting some of the neighbors.
So who wore it better??
Jailbird - Peter
Dorothy - Melissa
The lovely picture of all 4 of us. Great. Stick me next to the tall girl who weighs probably 100 lbs. Awesome. Add to that my totally flattering and supportive nursing bra and well, yeah. Proud Moment.
